Module # 4 Time Series

Creating a Time Series Visual in Tableau

1) This week I am tasked with creating a visual in Tableau. I had a bit of trouble deciphering the instructions, but I knew I had to create a time series of some sort using the data that I was given. The data I received seemed to cover vehicles generating money through some sort of taxi service. I found lists of cities, different revenue sources collusions with people or motor vehicles ID numbers etc. The most interesting time series I thought I could create was a comparison between the two revenue methods over time.

2) To do this I created a chart in tableau with the year as set to Columns and the two revenue sources being the rows. I decided to put this into an area chart for simplicity and decorated it. Here it is below:

3) This may not look impressive at first glance, but by reading the revenue on the y-axis we can see that the gap between these two sources of revenue is huge. One is denoted by hundreds of millions, and the other is denoted by billions. If we were to try to put these onto a stacked area chart then the vehicle revenue miles would over shadow the vehicle revenue hours so much so that it would be close to impossible to read.
