Module # 3 Adobe Illustrator

Editing a Map with Adobe Illustrator

1) This week I will be continuing with the map I created last time by adding some illustrations to it with Adobe Illustrator. This is my first time using Adobe Illustrator, and I have no idea what I can and can't do with it. I will try however, to create a title for my map, insert a picture of a hospital and try to clean it up as best I can in Tableau.

2) This is the map all cleaned up in Tableau before I sent it off to Adobe Illustrator:

3) I changed the color of the points where the hospitals are red to make them stand out more from the background. I also changed the background of the map to clearly indicate where the oceans are and other countries. I was not able to shrink and move Alaska down with Tableau though.

4) This is the map now, after modifying it with Adobe Illustrator.

5) I struggled with Adobe Illustrator for over five hours getting it to work right. There was no clear way to access the free version of Adobe Illustrator from the University so I ended up using the Browser version that Adobe provides. I was not able to find any "special permissions" sign upon logging into create cloud. Once I was using it, the version looked extremely limited. There were more tools available to me in Microsoft paint. I tried editing the map of the entire US, but it ended up looking too blurry and unclear. Thus I went with a smaller map of just Florida and the major hospitals it has. Perhaps I did not use the right version of adobe illustrator, but my experience with this software was extremely disappointing. I am not going to pay $20 a MONTH to using an image editing app, with fewer tools than Microsoft paint, that I would rarely use.
